Leamington Spa car tyres targeted by climate activists

Nov 01, 2024

Car tyres have been deflated by self-professed environmental campaigners in a spree of attacks.

Warwickshire Police said officers had so far identified 11 owners who have been targeted, with lentils found in tyre valves.

Reports of similar crimes across the country reveal lentils have often been the tool of choice.

A 22-year-old man from Leamington Spa has been arrested on suspicion of interfering with motor vehicles.

The force said the incidents took place in the town between 13 October and 28 October.

In a poster left at the scene, a group calling themselves The Tyre Extinguishers said bigger cars were contributing to climate change and poor air quality in towns across the UK.

Police said 4x4s, Sports Utility Vehicles, and even electric cars had all been targeted.

Campaigners acting under the same name also deflated tyres of cars in London and Leeds in April.

PC Graham Martin, from Leamington Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "We hope that any culprits are left feeling deflated after today."
